Today’s challenge has you going through your house looking for knickknacks that no longer thrill you. Webster defines knickknacks as, “a small trivial article usually intended for ornament”. For me it was a Precious Moments collection that I had started collecting in high school. Mine were donated 2 years ago after they had spent nearly10 years in a box. The thing about collections is sometimes they get out of hand. Someone finds out you like turtles so they buy you one, soon your house is filled with turtles and you now hate them.
Collections and knickknacks soon become dust collectors and the things that you have to pick up every time you dust, making housework last longer than it should. Who wants to keep picking something up and dusting under and around the object?
Not sure if you should get rid of something, place it in your hand and see what emotions it brings to you. If it brings a tear to your eye you may not be ready to get it out of your house. If you just have a small twinge of guilt about hurting someones feelings, it is time to get rid of the item. Let me tell you a little secret, it is OK to get rid of items that you received as gifts. If you are afraid of getting rid of your knickknacks because you may hurt someones feelings, then that person doesn’t truly love you. Someone who loves you will understand your need to change things up in your house. If you must box them up, only keep them in a box for under a year before you donate them. They are doing nobody any good while sitting in a box. Donate them and let them bring pleasure to someone else. Find a great organization or second hand shop that will take your knickknacks.
Wondering what this challenge is all about? Here are the details:
Before you can tackle your Spring Cleaning you must first get your Spring Flinging done, or as I like to call it “Spring Green Flingâ€, because I want you to be green as you are getting rid of the items that no longer are going to be in your home. I am going to challenge my readers and followers on facebook to join me as we get organized before we start our Spring Cleaning. This challenge will last 10 days and will close at midnight CST on March 30, 2011. I even have a prize at the end of the challenge. The winner will receive one hour of my organizing services. Don’t live by me, no worries as we can chat on the phone or via Skype or even do your organizing through email.
To be entered in the challenge you need to post a comment on my blog or post a comment on my facebook page. Each comment you get one point. Each point will enter you in the drawing for the free organizing hour. Invite your friends and family to join and tell me you invited them and you will get 2 points! For example if you get 50 points, you get 50 chances to win!
Remember to share with your friends and family, as you know if you send this to your mother she will spam all her friends with this…..go ahead, they wont mind!
